You don't need to be an expert birder to contact a Pal. However these are serious birdwatchers who are willing to help. It is a privilege to contact them. Your message should reflect decent respect.
A Birding Pal does not charge a fee, however you should pay for their expenses, transportation costs, entrance fees, meals, etc.
Pals will answer your messages quickly, if they can. You might write to someone who is traveling, so write to more than one Pal, and be patient. Let us know if someone doesn't answer and we'll check that everything is okay.
Let us know when you are going to meet a Pal, and then let us know how it went.

When you contact a Birdingpal looking for advice and/or information, you should have some patience.
It is not always possible for a Birding Pal to respond right away. If you don't get a reply please write to us.
If you are listed at BirdingPal.org you do have a passphrase.
Note I am a Canadian resident. I have been birding seriously since 1991. I bird 300+ days a year, I have seen over 250 species in the Ottawa 50K circle since Sept 2007. I have seen over 425 species in the UK. My local patch is Britannia Conservation Area/Mud Lake and the Ottawa River to the west of the city of Ottawa. I also photograph many of the birds I find. My yard list is approaching 100 species. If I cannot guide you personally- then I can usually find you another Ottawa Field Naturalist Birder who can.
